There are still about 50 cookbooks from the Middle Ages. Most of the cookbooks that are still remaining belonged to the wealthy people. The food that noblemen ate was very different from the food that peasants ate. A nobleman’s meal consisted of spiced meat, fruit, vegetables, and fish. The vegetables and fruit were cooked because they thought that the raw fruit contracted diseases.
Gardeners grew herbs. Big dinners were for when the lord had guests to show off wealth. They made sugar sculptures, which were very appetizing. Most poor people ate preserved meals. Both the rich people and the poor people ate pottage. Some poor people used bread as plate.
