Ring Around the Rosie is a popular nursery rhyme about the black death. The black death (aka the bubonic plague) arrived by sea in the 1300s. The black death killed more than 20 million people. The black death was very contagious. A lot of scholars think ring around the Rosie is about the Black Death but some doubt that it is.
Ring around the Rosie described the black boils around their skin surrounded by red “rings”. A pocket full of poise describes a herbal remedy because the people thought that if you didn’t smell the air then you wouldn’t catch the illness. Ashes ashes describes cremation of the dead bodies. Some people change the lyrics (ashes ashes) to achoo achoo which describes the terrible sneezing that comes with the bubonic plague. We all fall down describes the death of these victims.

Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall,
Humpty Dumpty had a great fall,
All the King's Horses and all the King's men
Couldn't put Humpty together again.

Couldn't put Humpty together again.
Little Bo peep has lost her sheep
And doesn't know where to find them.
Leave them alone and they'll come home,
Bringing their tails behind them.
And doesn't know where to find them.
Leave them alone and they'll come home,
Bringing their tails behind them.
