A manor is the land that the lord owns and shares with the clergy, serfs, and family. Usually peasants lived outside of the manors houses in small villages. The king owned many manors. Most manors were owned by bishoprics and monasteries, which were the clergy or members of the church. Most nobles owned at least one manor.
Serfs worked in the manors for the lords in return for small plots of land. People weren’t allowed to hunt on the manor unless they were granted permission from their lord or king. Peasants that lived on manors were called serfs. Kings and queens lived on manors. Also, princes and princesses lived on manors. Bishops often lived in manors with the lords.
